Liam Dolan’s research interests are in cellular development and evolution in land plants, using specialized rooting cells and root hairs as models.
The practical outcome of this research is to find ways to enhance nutrient uptake in crops, particularly of phosphate from soil in heavily weathered and acidic soils. He is studying rice, wheat and brassicas with the aim of developing cultivars that require less phosphate application, which in turn would reduce the amounts of phosphate fertilizers applied to fields and that runoff into water systems as pollutants.
