Marian Stamp Dawkins's research interests lie in animal welfare. She has a particular interest in the impact that pressure for more efficient food production might have on the welfare of food animals, especially poultry.

She uses a down to earth definition of animal welfare: good welfare exists when animals are healthy and have what they want. She is currently working in collaboration with large commercial broiler (meat) chicken producers and breeders to develop a camera/computer system that gives a continuous automated measure of chicken health and welfare throughout life.

She has established a partnership with the Food Animal Initiative (FAI) at the University Farm at Wytham to facilitate putting welfare research into commercial practice.
